Program Details

The Insurance Youth program will develop a structured approach to leadership training specific to the insurance industry.  The world of Insurance Youth is a non-profit program designed to develop the leadership potential of youth from the USA and around the world.  The program provides youth with internship opportunities in the insurance industry and actively promotes the insurance industry to the younger generation of future leaders.

Program Description

The program is designed to include four stages which offer an intensive training experience that is diverse, challenging, and fun. This will be accomplished over the course of varying internship lengths (3, 6, 9, or 12 month periods):

Phase

Tasks

 1) Insurance Youth Initiation

Preparation and Training

 2) Insurance Association

Administrative Assistance, Industry Research and Event Preparation

 3) Insurance Agency or Insurance Carrier

Operational Process Support, Production Support

 4) Insurance Youth Wrap-up

Review and Final Presentation

Phase 1: To start out, the intern will be trained on the necessary skills and background information of the participating companies to prepare them for the second stage of the internship program.

Phase 2/3: Participation in the insurance associations, insurance agencies, and/or an insurance carrier will be interchangeable and youths will experience at least two aspects of the company during these stages.

Phase 4: The youth will return to the headquarters of the program to do a review of what they have learned and share their thoughts and feelings with the other interns. On top of that, the intern will prepare a final presentation to be delivered to his/her colleagues and potentially to organizational sponsors and program supporters.

Throughout the stages, each youth will have opportunities to  attend regular courses during the weekends or rather a series of seminars arranged for them by the program in order to gain more skills and knowledge. The intern will also be responsible for critical “reinvest” activities such as organizing events for this program, program improvement, during their term on course.

Focus

The Insurance Youth internship program will initially target U.S. based insurance associations or relevant organizations for a youth internship program.

Once the regional youth exchange has been well established, we aim to introduce the global youth exchange into countries with some level of English mastery. The program will propose collaboration with specific organizations and appoint them to be the country’s representative.

The representative will market the program to their local education institutes like the high schools and colleges. They will seek youths who might be interested in “personal finance” management and want career guidance – potentially to join in the risk management industry.

The program  will seek out individuals in either an insurance association or  its members companies, to be mentors to the interns currently participating.

The program intends to create a triple win in achieving its goals:

(1) Youth wins (broad industry exposure and practical skills with an industry focus, multi-cultural exposure, and fun/challenging experience)

•    Able to work in an insurance company at a young age to see what it is really like
•    Able to gain overseas working experience (in the case of global exchange)
•    Able to learn from a designated mentor and from each other

(2) Industry leaders win (channel for executives to help company family members and others trained and placed as interns and connected for the summer or longer / inexpensive labor for industry associations and companies / extra value to embed into their college recruitment programs)

•    Improved access to a talent pool as potential hires in the future
•    Enable them to look outside of their geography
•    Good public relations
•    Self preservation through the mentoring system
•    Low cost, high energy and eager staff during an internship and also in the case of hiring their intern back permanently after graduation
•    Feedback from the youth (third party) about their company (provides another external and unbiased viewpoint)

(3) Colleges and universities win (extra job placement value add to embed into their risk management / insurance departments)
